Do I Need Trade Approved Jewellery Scales?

Its a question we get asked every day, and the answer is that if a financial transaction is taking over the jewellery scale, then YES, you need them to be stamped for trade use . They are verified for use within your postcode area, either by Trading Standards officers, or by those global manufacturers with facilites to stamp for trade use on behalf of local authorities.

How Accurate are they?

Usually jewellery balances are stamped to 3000 or 6000 divisions of their maximum capacity. This is an interval of the scales capacity that trading Standards are comfortable knowing that both the buyer and seller can rely on the scale to be fair and accurate. Nowadays many weighing scales are much more accurate and repeatable than this, however it has been many years since this legislation has been revisited and modified. Therefore unstamped  scales, are often sold with up to 30,000 divisions of capacity, i.e. 6kg x 0.1g. It doesnt mean they are more or less accurate than trade stamped ones, just that if that particular  jewellery scale was stamped for trade use the division size would probably be 1g.
